PATINATION |

Bronze is a metal alloy based on copper. With age, it oxidises and depending on the surrounding conditions this oxidation gives different results. This process is called patination and the tiny protective film is called patina. Handmade patination is used to establish strong protection and create beautiful colourisation of bronze sculptures. The bronze sculpture is heated to a high temperature and appropriate chemicals are applied to its hot surface to oxidise the surface and produce colour. Patination is an art in itself, and creates the final look of the piece. Once the patina is finished, the sculpture is sealed with a clear wax.

Sometimes bronze restoration is needed if a sculpture has been hit, dropped or not carefully looked after. A small amount of bronze renewal may be necessary when one particular part of a patina has become warn. It is possible to restore a small area and not interfere with the remainder of the sculpture. In certain circumstances repatination of the whole sculpture is needed. If you have a bronze sculpture which needs some special care or you would like to change existing patina and overall appearance of your figure just drop an EMAIL and we will discuss your requirements. Please, read this article on how to care and maintain a bronze sculpture and its patination. |
